Ula Osman
Ula Osman, Gastkünstlerin
Ula Osman's work is deeply rooted in Sudan's cultural and social fabric, exploring the dynamics of center and margin to reflect diverse narratives of identity, place, and belonging. As an artist-in-residence during the 2024/25 academic year, Ula will engage with students and the community to discuss these critical themes.
Her artistic practice includes collage, photo transfer (monotype), modified photography, and drawing—techniques she uses to weave together layers of meaning. Her work creates a visual tapestry that captures both the fantasies and realities of urban life in Sudan. For example, her collages often juxtapose vibrant cityscapes with fragmented portraits, symbolizing the tension between unity and division within communities.
By examining the interplay between center and margin, Ula metaphorically highlights the often-overlooked voices and stories within cities. She challenges conventional perceptions of space and identity, inviting viewers to reconsider what constitutes the "center" and the "margin." Through juxtaposing imagery and techniques, she sparks dialogue about the complexities of Sudanese society, where diverse experiences coexist and inform one another.
Through her residency, Ula hopes to inspire a new generation of artists to explore their own narratives and recognize the power of art as a tool for social commentary and change. Together with her audience, she will delve into the fantasies of the city—how they shape collective consciousness and influence self-perception.
“I believe art has the power to bridge gaps,” says Ula. “It allows us to see ourselves in others and find beauty in the overlooked.” She invites everyone to join her on this journey of exploration and reflection, navigating the rich landscapes of center and margin in Sudan and beyond.
