Andrew Gilbert (born 1980, Edinburgh , Scotland) studied Fine Art (Art History and Art) from 1997 to 2002 at the University of Edinburgh and Edinburgh College of Art. In works on paper and large scale installations he explores the influence of 19th century Colonialism and Military History upon today. His work is informed by numerous research trips to South African battlefields and historical monuments. Gilbert is also inspired by Advertising, Propaganda, the Reformation and the contemporary Western worship of Objects. He draws influence from cheap Military and Ethnographic Museums displays, Colonial Exhibitions as well as the language of visual propaganda in popular culture, art history (Primtivism in Modern Art) and the connections of these pejorative images of Exotic cliches from the Medieval to the Present day. Absurdist humour is an important element in Gilbert´s work.
Exhibitions include "Artist and Empire" at Tate Britain,2015 / National Gallery of Singapore, 2016, "Trophies of the Savages" at Blank Projects, Cape Town , 2014 and "Shaka Zulu - The Musical" Sperling, Munich, 2016.
Gilbert lives in Berlin since 2002.
