Aller-retour et aller
Reading in response to a film
Wartenau Versammlung #19
Mit Karolin Meunier
The performance Aller-retour et aller enters into a dialogue with “Wanda” (USA, 1970), the first and only feature film by director and actress Barbara Loden. The protagonist leaves her home in rural Pennsylvania and becomes the seemingly aimless companion of a bank robber. The film is now one of the most important works of female independent cinema. French author Nathalie Léger dedicated a book to the story behind the film in 2012. In “Supplément à la vie de Barbara Loden”, she writes: “A woman telling her own story through that of another woman.”
In her reading of both the film and the book, Meunier blends the biographies of the film character, the actress, the writer, and other figures by exploring the process of reading and translating. The performance script got recently published in the series of bilingual pamphlets by Harun Farocki Institut.
The reading and book presentation is part of the Para-educational Research seminar by Nora Sternfeld at the HFBK Hamburg (organized in collaboration with Julia Stolba), https://art-education.hfbk.net/.../para-educational...
Karolin Meunier is an artist and writer based in Berlin. Her performance, text and video works observe how access to individual experience is accomplished through cultural and standardized practices. She is a PhD candidate at HFBK Hamburg (DE) and her research is oriented towards experimental writing strategies, feminist filmmaking, translation processes, and the politics of dialogue. She is part of the collective publisher b_books in Berlin; her artist book on the work of Italian feminist Carla Lonzi is forthcoming.
