Presentation of The Animistic Workshop with Assi Meshullam
Ort:
- Raum 212, Lerchenfeld 2
“Since the end of the 20th century, new approaches to animism have emerged within the field of anthropology. The Western view, which once regarded animism as mere superstition and a primitive foundation of religion, has evolved. Now, animism is studied from inclusive, epistemological perspectives, recognizing its deep connection to the ecological systems of which humans are an integral part. Recent discoveries in zoology and botany, suggesting that consciousness may not be exclusive to humans, complement these anthropological views and invite a renewed examination of animism. Some scholars even argue that adopting a more animistic approach to life and the environment could foster a much more sustainable reality and help humanity address the current environmental crisis.” (excerpt from Assi Meshullam’s workshop description)
The exhibition presents the students’ results who, in a multi-part workshop with Assi Meshullam, explored in depth how animistic concepts can enrich our daily lives and artistic practice.
Assi Meshullam is a visual artist and associate professor in the Department of Art at the University of Haifa. With a BA in Art and Archaeology and an MA in Biblical Studies, Meshullam has been an active artist for over 20 years. His work extensively explores religion and myth, with a particular focus on the history and rituals of the ancient Near East. His artistic endeavors span painting, sculpture, video, installation, and digital art, all accompanied by written reflections.
