Research Project "The New Woman"
The exhibition was curated by art historian Prof Dr Ina Jessen, who was most recently responsible for curating Dix und die Gegenwart at the Deichtorhallen Hamburg. Students from the Stage Space class (Prof Evi Bauer) developed the exhibition design, while students from the Digital Graphics class (Prof Christoph Knoth and Prof Konrad Renner) were responsible for the design of the digital publication. In the accompanying programme, current female students of the HFBK Hamburg will present their work and make reference to the historical positions. This will create links between generations of female artists and update the themes of the time.
The exhibition is generously supported by the Hubertus Wald Stiftung and the Karl H. Ditze Stiftung.
open daily except Mondays, 2pm-7pm, Thursdays until 9pm
The exhibition
The exhibition The New Woman presents more than 50 works by 14 selected female artists and designers who studied at the Staatliche Kunstgewerbeschule zu Hamburg, the predecessor institution of the HFBK, from 1907 onwards. Initially, they were only allowed to attend selected courses as ‘guest students’, but in 1908 a workshop for female handicrafts was set up and in 1909 Maria Brinckmann was appointed as the first female teacher. This meant that women were allowed to study at state art colleges in Hamburg long before they were officially admitted in 1919.
