Ort der Verbundenheit
In 2020, students of Professor Jesko Fezer's Experimental Design studio, together with the Ort der Verbundenheit working group, developed a concept for a memorial workshop for the Neuengamme Concentration Camp Memorial.
It is a memorial in the broader sense, designed to be growing, open and participatory: a printing and poster workshop called "Ort der Verbundenheit" (Place of Connectedness), which is intended to keep alive a living memory of the former prisoners. Relatives can design posters there themselves. Converted into printing plates, these motifs are displayed on shelves in the memorial's outdoor area.
But memories fade, even posters weather. This shows: Commemoration is an active process that thrives on participation. For this reason, each poster motif is documented on the website ort-der-verbundenheit.org - according to the principle of a growing archive - and thus made available beyond the specific site. In addition, visitors to the website can use the motifs as downloads to print and distribute posters themselves. "Commemoration means action!" reads the multilingual website www.ort-der-verbundenheit.org. There, family members and people who would like to support the project can find instructions on how to get involved.
The project was developed over a period of two years in an equal, interdisciplinary collaboration between students of the HFBK, volunteer members of the Neuengamme e.V. Working Group, which included relatives of former Neuengamme Concentration Camp inmates, and members of the Friends of the Neuengamme Concentration Camp Memorial.
