Dr. Astrid Mania

Dr. Astrid Mania, Professor of Art Criticism and Modern Art History

Astrid Mania commences the new professorship for art criticism and modern art history at HFBK Hamburg, beginning with the summer term 2017. In this capacity, she is also responsible for the HFBK’s international students. She studied art history, architectural history and philosophy in Aachen, writing her PhD thesis on the Russian-US artist duo Komar & Melamid.

Previously she held teaching positions with a focus on contemporary art and writing at UdK Berlin and HGB Leipzig among others. In addition, she was visiting professor at the Kunstakademie Münster. During the winter term 2004/2005, she was guest tutor / guest curator at the MA Curating Contemporary Art at The Royal College of Art, London.

Working as an independent art critic, she has been a regular contributor to Süddeutsche Zeitung and Artforum International. From 2008–2010, she was editor of the German artnet magazine. In 2013, she received the ADKV – Art Cologne award for art criticism.
