Experiences of participating students
CJ Chandler, stay in 2019
My aim was to glean knowledge from Professor Shore while investigating for myself what it means to live and work in the US. For the rest, I had no idea what to expect. This was my first visit, the first time I would set foot on American soil. With that, I carried this pressure of having a limited time to make work in a place I didn’t know, using gear with which I wasn’t familiar. I went in with not much more than the privelege of this pressure and the knowledge that, at least, I would be fed.
[…] I’ll say that the most noticeable difference to the teaching I had experienced at HFBK Hamburg was the sheer amount of reading, writing and production expected. I put this down to the weekly classes and the fact that, while on exchange, I was enrolled in undergraduate courses. The undergraduate level is generally more formative, where high production and class participation are given more weight than one all encompassing thesis or body of work—as may be expected at masters level. I found the courses challenging and I was able to achieve top grades in all my classes, refining my reading, writing and photographic production.
