HFBK Hamburg supervises doctoral projects that contribute, from a variety of perspectives, to the study of the arts, their conditions, contexts, and functions.

These may include, for example, analyses of artistic works as well as engagements with historical, social, media-related, and cultural processes that have influenced—or been influenced by—artistic discourses, past and present. They may also encompass investigations into art-theoretical or philosophical concepts through which the arts reflect upon themselves and articulate their self-understanding.

HFBK Hamburg also enables and supports doctoral projects with a substantial artistic component, the relationship of which to the theoretically and academically required doctoral work must be explicitly defined. In such artistic–academic doctoral projects, the scholarly component must predominate.

Application period +

Applications are accepted exclusively for the summer semester. The application period for the summer semester 2026 is: September 1—September 30, 2026, 4:00 p.m. (application deadline).

Admission requirements +

Admission to the doctoral program requires the successful completion of a Diploma or Master’s degree from a German higher education institution with an overall grade of at least “good,” or an equivalent degree from a foreign higher education institution.

A further requirement is proof of aptitude for academic research. This may be demonstrated either through academic components completed as part of the previous degree program or acquired during the doctoral studies. In the latter case, the Doctoral Committee may require the applicant to provide corresponding proof of achievement within a specified period.

Applicants who completed their studies at a foreign higher education institution must provide proof of the equivalence of their degree to the Doctoral Committee.
