Experiences of participating students
Asma BenSlama, Jahrgang 2022
I applied for the ASA exchange at CalArts because it’s known for its focus on self-discovery and experimentation as a way of making art, a cross-disciplinary training, I have thought of it to benefit my artistic development.
Naomi Sam, Jahrgang 2021
Being at CalArts as an exchange student for one year has opened new horizons for me in terms of thinking, community, and art practice. I was impressed by how advanced interdisciplinarity is practiced and valued here through the close relations of the various schools within the institute (Art, Animation, Critical Studies, Dance, Film/Video, Music, Theater), how supportive and appreciative teachers and students are engaging with each other and at what level inclusion, accessibility, and de-colonizing perspectives are practiced.
Tips & tricks for the semester abroad (as of 2021/22)
It's all about the money (!?)
Jung Min Lee:
A solid financial plan and physical proof of support from family members are required, especially since the living costs in the US was one and a half times more expensive than compared to Germany. And you must have good English communication skills.
Where and how can you experience art and culture(s)?
Naomi Sam:
LA museums and galleries are something spectacular. There are a variety of beautiful gardens and nature parks, deserts and beaches, which are a must-see. As a foreigner, I did feel very welcomed there.
Good to know! What should I bear in mind at the university?
Asma BenSlama:
The access to different departments and the openness between classes made the conversation around my work in the class meeting rich and cross-disciplinary.
However there is no obligations of choosing one class and one professor, but you can access different critique class and most students would choose a professor that connects more to their medium/department.
Every thursday there is a gallery night, where all galleries at CalArts are open, mostly thesis shows of students or mid-res shows. Added to that multiple rooms or spaces are open for performances or music, since CalArts have a very important department of Music.
