Symposium: Writing in Future
Venue:
- Aula der HFBK Hamburg
Writing as part of artistic practice is currently very popular at art colleges, in the art world, and in art criticism. Writing plays an important role in both the conception and implementation of artistic works and is evident on stage, in film, in performances, and as part of installations and visual works.
The public symposium and corresponding exhibition are dedicated to different ways of dealing with texts and writing practices in an art context. In the exchange between artists and authors, transitions and interferences in the writing and staging of a text become visible. In addition to the relationship between visual art and literature, five panel discussions will focus on other relationships, such as institutional, technological, and poet(ological) ones, all of which have implications for the possible futures of writing.
The symposium is open to the public, free of charge, and no registration is required.
Two workshops will also be held as part of the symposium: How to Sing a Picture? and Bone by bone, stone by stone.
Concept: Sabine Boshamer, Marlene Kirsten
Please find here the short bios of all participants.
Program
Wednesday, December 3
- 7-8:30 p.m., Panel 1: Artistic writing
Moderated by Mathias Zeiske
With Enis Maci, Cemile Sahin, Sasha Marianna Salzmann, Senthuran Varatharajah
What place can writing have at art colleges? When is it an accompanying medium of reflection, and when is it an independent form of artistic expression? On the opening night, artists and authors who have each found their own way to literary practice and bring different experiences with ‘schools of writing’ will discuss these questions.
Thursday, December 4
- 2:00–3:30 p.m., Panel 2: Shaping Writing
Moderated by Hanne Loreck
With Sophia Eisenhut, Katrin Mayer, Max Prediger, Daniela Seel
This panel brings together textual articulation with questions of its design. What means are used to write a text, how is it contextualized in publishing and editorial decisions, and how is it shaped by its (typo)graphic design? The discussion explores the modeling of the social and cultural environment through writing.
- 4:00–5:30 p.m., Panel 3: Artificial Narrative
Moderated by Friedrich von Borries and Elisa Linseisen
With Lukas Bärfuss, Jenifer Becker, Hito Steyerl
How is AI changing artistic writing practice? How can writing with AI subvert monopolistic infrastructures and develop processes beyond prompt logic? Art(ificial) narration as a touchstone: because writing about and in futures also means rewriting technical conditions.
- 6 p.m., exhibition opening at ICAT with performance by Anja Dietmann
Friday, December 5
- 2:00–3:30 p.m., Panel 4: Art Criticism
Moderated by Astrid Mania
With Noemi Yoko Molitor, Charlie Stein, Steffen Zillig
What motivates artists to devote themselves also—or primarily—to art criticism, to change mediums, and to turn their attention to the visual practices of others? And are artists better critics because they know what they are writing about?
- 4–5:30 p.m., Panel 5: As soon as the invented language enters us something else will vibrate in our skin
Moderated by Jason Dodge
With CAConrad, Vera Lutz, Eugene Ostashevsky
Language and words have a sometimes symbiotic, and sometimes fraught relationship to visual thinking. This panel will address translation, influence, and transference; the guests will present their poems, ideas, and research.
- 6 p.m., Workshop presentation at ICAT with Enis Macis and Kinga Tóth as well as students
