The department »Theory and History« combines issues concerned with artistic and cultural sciences and the history and theory of design, as well as philosophy, semiotics, media theory and other increasingly relevant sciences. For students taking an artistic subject as their main subject, »Theory and History« will provide the necessary orientation and in-depth knowledge. Students taking only classes from the »Theory and History« department will receive an autonomous scientific education in the fields and topics named.

Scientific studies
Prof. Dr. Hubertus Gaßner ist an der HFBK Hamburg als Ehrenprofessor (nach § 17 HmbHG) für Kunstgeschichte im Studienschwerpunkt Theorie und Geschichte tätig. Er studierte Kunstgeschichte, Philosophie und Soziologie in Marburg, Heidelberg, München und Hamburg. Seit Februar 2006 ist er Direktor der Hamburger Kunsthalle.
Prof. Dr. Hubertus Gassner is attached to the HFBK Hamburg as honorary professor of art history in the department of Theory and History. He studied art history, philosophy and sociology in Marburg, Heidelberg, Munich and Hamburg. He has been director of the Hamburger Kunsthalle since February 2006.
