Alfred Toepfer Stiftung F.V.S.

The Alfred Toepfer Stiftung F.V.S. foundation is involved in cultural, scientific, educational and conservation activities across Europe, and especially in promoting pan-European understanding while preserving cultural diversity. It was founded in 1931 by Hamburg businessman and landowner Alfred C. Toepfer as the »Stiftung F.V.S. zu Hamburg«. Toepfer never revealed whether the abbreviation »F.V.S.« referred to the Prussian reformer Freiherr vom Stein or to the poet and philosopher Friedrich von Schiller. When Alfred Toepfer died in 1993, his name was added to the name of the foundation.

Today, the Stiftung is involved in European integration, understanding between nations, art and culture, science, conservation and youth causes. Further activities extend to land and forest husbandry and to the preservation of monuments. The Alfred Toepfer Stiftung F.V.S. is an operative foundation that runs projects and programmes; it does not usually receive applications for financial support.
