Members of the »Hochschulrat«
Konstantin Kleffel of the Hamburg architecture bureau Kleffel Papay Warncke has been president of the Architektenkammer Hamburg (chamber of architects Hamburg) since 1998. Konstantin Kleffel is chairman of the HFBK’s Hochschulrat.
Dr. Hans Jochen Waitz, patron of the arts and collector, is deputy to the chairman of the HFBK’s Hochschulrat. Also, he is a member of the university's Society of Friends as well as the board of the Kunstverein Hamburg and numerous foundations supporting recent art. As a law graduate, he campaigned with the architect Jan Störmer for the preservation of the ›Fleet‹ (canal) island along Admiralitätsstraße and the Alsterfleet, thereby laying the foundations for the arrival of numerous galleries and studios there.
Prof. Dr. Kornelia von Berswordt-Wallrabe is director of the state museum, the art collections, castles and gardens of Schwerin. She is also, among other things, a member of the selection committee of the Deutschen Akademie Rome, Villa Massimo, and professor of art history at the Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weißensee.
Nikolaus W. Schües is a ship-owner and executive partner in the ship-owning company F. Laeisz. He is a member of the Freie Akademie der Künste and of the board of trustees of the foundation supporting the Hamburg art collection as well as that of the Hamburgischen Kulturstiftung (Hamburg cultural foundation). He has held voluntary posts as vice-praeses and praeses of the Handelskammer Hamburg (Hamburg chamber of commerce) as well as chairman of the Verband Deutscher Reeder (association of German ship-owners).
Heike Catherina Mertens is spokeswoman of the executive board of the Cultural Department of the Ernst Schering Foundation.
The Hochschulrat has the following responsibilities:
- Deciding on plans for structure and development
- Deciding on the basic principles for equipping the University and distributing its resources
- Authorising fundamental rules and the statutes for the quality assessment process
- Authorising budget plans and rules on fees
- Selection and de-selection of the President
- Selection and de-selection of the Chancellor
- Making recommendations on the profile development of the University
- Making recommendations on where to place emphasis in research and teaching
- Making recommendations on the further development of the range of studies on offer
Individuals from scientific, cultural, economic and political life who are familiar with the nature of higher education can be appointed as members of the University council. Their posts are honorary, and their time in office is four years in length.
